Taking The Wheel is a darkly comic film about the complicated relationship between an obstinate 90-year-old woman who refuses to give up driving, and her well-intentioned son who will stop at nothing to get her off the road. Written and directed by David Ackerman, Taking The Wheel had its world premiere at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival, where it was Nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear Award for Best Short Film and screened several times with Richard Eyre's Academy Award-winning feature IRIS. It has screened in competition at numerous festivals worldwide including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival; the San Francisco International Film Festival (with the Norwegian feature ELLING, Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film); the Wine Country International Film Festival; The St. Petersburg International Film Festival; The Tehran International Film Festival; and most recently was the Winner of the Audience Favorite Award at the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films.

David Ackerman received a BFA in Film from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. He received a Masters Degree in Social Sciences Administration from Case Western Reserve University. He is the recipient of the Mandel Scholars Award, the Judith Holm Award for Clinical Recognition, David is a filmmaker and a psychiatric social worker. He runs group therapy in a locked, intensive residential treatment facility for adolescents with severe emotional disturbances, as well as individual and family therapy with clients ages 4-18 in the residential, foster care and outpatient populations. He is developing narrative and documentary feature projects using film as a tool for social advocacy.
